Vedas: Shivo Vedah — Shiva is the Veda, and the Veda is Shiva. In other words, Shiva is the embodiment of the Vedas. Just as God is eternal and without origin, so too are the Vedas considered impersonal (not man-made). Therefore, the worship, Abhishek (ritual bathing), yajnas (fire offerings), and chants performed for Lord Shiva are done through the Vedic mantras mentioned in the scriptures.
The word Rudra has several meanings: beauty (śṛṅgāra), calming, protection, and destruction. That is, the one who transforms anger into compassion and grace is called Rudra.
Sarve Devāḥ Rudraḥ. Sarve Devāḥ Śivārthakāḥ.
— The soul of all deities is Rudra. All gods reside within Rudra. Hence, Shiva is considered the supreme among all deities.
Just as salutations are dear to the Sun (through Surya Namaskar), and offerings of water are cherished, Bilva leaves (Bael leaves) are dear to Lord Shiva.
Shiva especially loves being worshipped with Bilva leaves during the Abhishek ritual.
Shiva is known as Ashutosh, meaning the one who is easily pleased.
